Once upon a time,

there was a little mountain village in the Dolomites,

where a cheerful family gathered around a large table in a little mountain hut…

Silenced reigned, all that could be heard was the crackling of wood burning in the stove.

The table was spread with produce from their land: potatoes, speck, home-made chutneys,

the inimitable Puzzone di Moena cheese, tomatoes from the garden and water fresh from the mountains..

Granddad, Opa, began to tell a story, as only he knew how; a story of his childhood

when they made yoghurt for the entire Fassa and Fiemme valleys with the milk from their cows.

His grandchildren's eyes shone with the pride they had in their Granddad,

his sons' eyes were filled with longing to have their dad always with them.

When the story was over, everyone went outside to look at the stars shining over the Fuciade vale,

they sipped some mulled wine and raised a toast between their Ladin songs and dances..

Late in the night, the family put the hut to rights and turned out the lights.

Everyone was happy to be back: the ritual had once again been performed.
